Hearing Protectors Prevent Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is an irreversible damage to the ears, which is why people are currently investing in protecting their ears through hearing protectors. Loss of hearing not only impairs one of our most essential and basic senses, it can also contribute to a myriad of other health problems such as cardiovascular, cerebral, digestive and other ailments.

Without our hearing we place ourselves at risk for severe physiological conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and even stroke. It is therefore important to protect our ears from any damage that can affect our hearing and in turn, our health. This is where hearing protection plays such an important role.

There are various kinds of hearing protection gears available. The most commonly known are earplugs that prevent high levels of sound from entering the ear canals and damaging our hearing, thereby acting as a shield.

People who are interested in more advanced types of hearing protection that are customized, they can select either filtered hearing protectors or non-filtered ones. Filtered hearing protectors allow some amount of essential speech input and other essential sounds to pass through the protective gear, thereby enabling smoother conversations. These types of protectors have the ability to adapt to your unique hearing protection needs and you can select the amount of sound filtration you require. Non-filtered hearing protectors on the other hand, provide superior protection from sound but in turn block out essential communication as well, which makes conversations more difficult.

It may sound like common sense to wear your hearing protective gear properly in order to get the maximum protection from noise, but many people neglect to do so. People often get earplugs that are too loose or do not wear them properly which causes them to slip out, thereby reducing their efficacy. Another factor to consider while using hearing protection is consistency of use; wearing earplugs only occasionally and for short periods of time are not as effective as consistent, long term use. In fact, as much as 25% of the efficiency of your hearing protector is lost due to inconsistent use.

It is important to note that the flexibility of sound enables it to travel through other methods even if your ears are protected, such as through vibration, skull bones, and spaces between your ears and the hearing protector.

The World Health Organization recently released information that shows that sound levels that exceed 75 dB can prove to be detrimental to hearing, if the exposure duration lasts for 8 hours daily. These limits vary from various organizations and none of the predefined levels can assure that the ears will not suffer hearing damage. The best way to ensure the prevention of hearing loss is to protect yourself using hearing protectors to prevent any possible damage in any given noisy environment.
